MEDICINE CABINET SAFETY

  • DISCUSSION OVERVIEW: We’ve all heard the cautionary tales of people in legitimate pain being prescribed a medication to help, which ultimately ends up becoming a bigger health problem than the one it was meant to treat. The dangers of long-term use of prescription painkillers like Vicodin or Percocet have been covered extensively by the media, but in all those warnings, no one’s mentioned acetaminophen – until now! While prescription abuse carries bigger dangers, many don’t realize that acetaminophen overdose is one of the most common poisonings worldwide. National Institute of Health data shows that too much of this pain reliever can lead to liver failure or death. The FDA has set the recommended maximum for adults at 4,000 milligrams per day and warns consumers to avoid taking more than one acetaminophen product at a time.

  2. Know which medications contain acetaminophen.
  3. Know the recommended dosage for adults.

BACK INJURY PROTECTION

  • DISCUSSION OVERVIEW:  Back pain is one of the most common reasons people use a sick day, second only to the common cold. Back pain doesn’t just strike when we’ve been lifting heavy boxes, and it’s not a sign of physical weakness. Did you know that stress, anxiety and depression are linked with higher incidence of back pain? Did you know that back pain may be a symptom of muscular imbalance or tightness in another part of your body? Triggers of back pain range from chronic muscle tightness to acute injury to lack of exercise. But don’t worry, we’ve got your back! In this workshop we’ll review basic anatomy and show you just how everything works, teach you the difference between acute and chronic back pain and teach you simple stretches and exercises to protect your back.

  1. Gain a basic understanding of the anatomy of the back and spine.
  2. Identify risk factors in your life and learn preventative measures to maintain the health of your back.

  • DISCUSSION OVERVIEW: Fun and eye-opening presentation showing how common household chemicals, when mixed accidentally or with purpose, can be deadly causing accidental injuries and death.
  • LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of this session, participants will be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrations are given to show how combining certain chemicals can lead to fire and toxic smoke.
  2. Where and how to store household chemicals.
  3. Child safety suggestions.
